My first memories of golf are going to practice at the club that my grandfather was a member at. He started taking me to the range at his course when I was in diapers. When I began grammar school, he would pick me up from school with my golf clubs in his car and we would head to the course. I would always practice in the same order: chip for a little, hit a few balls on the range, practice a few putts, and then he would take me to play a few holes. My grandfather still today will make the time to meet me after school and spend time with me while I practice.
I am a hard worker and a pretty determined individual. My determination is important when playing for college teams as that maintains a level of consistency in my individual play and will contribute to the team’s performance. I like to make the most of my practice, which is why I think people would say that I always look very serious on the course even though I am practicing. As a team member I feel it is important to help motivate those around you to also strive to be the best they can be.
My ultimate goal in golf is to turn professional and make a living off a game I love to play. I believe that college is a major stepping stone to that main goal which will help me develop as a player and as a person. Being in the team environment in college golf and being on that big stage is what will help me gain the maturity and confidence I will need when playing in the big moments.
I would say that I have learned how to maintain a balanced lifestyle between playing golf and focusing on academics. Throughout my upbringing my parents always enforced upon me the importance of managing my time to ensure I maintained a balance between my academics and my love for playing sports. I’ve grown up playing multiple sports, switching between soccer, tennis and golf depending on the season. Playing different sports helped me understand that I must adapt to the different time and physical requirements of each sport while ensuring I maintained my focus on my academics.
Since entering High School, I have taken on a full schedule enrolling in Advance Placement classes while also working towards achieving my AICE Diploma and a Bright Futures Scholarship. I have been inducted into the National Honors Society throughout my middle school and high school years. It is my goal to transition what I have learned about maintaining a balance between my sports and academics into university.
Throughout my high school golf career, I’ve had the privilege of developing a good friendship among fellow teammates and competitors. I am known as a person that is serious about their game and shows respect to the sport and their opponents. I think my teammates would describe me as a determined and dedicated player, that knows when to take care of business and when the team needs support and encouragement.
My tournament prep consists of two main areas of focus, practicing my game and studying the golf course.
During the week prior to a tournament, I focus on swing drills and specific parts of my game that needs improving. My goal in my practice sessions is to gain a level of confidence in my game so that when I am warming up on the range before a tournament round, I am only focused on getting loose and not on my swing. I take my practice time before a tournament serious as I know I only have a limited amount of time before that first tee shot in the tournament. My goal is to be as comfortable and confident as possible before stepping onto the first tee
I am not always able to play a practice round before a tournament. As a result, having the ability to studying the course on my own is critical. To plan my strategy for handling the course I use apps like 18 Birdies and SwingU to gain a visual understanding of the course. I use these apps to visualize each hole and establish a strategy of how I will play the course. By investing this time to prepare for each tournament I feel confident sticking to my gameplan as I play each hole.
Course management is a vital aspect in having good results in tournaments, and it depends on the situation that I am in during the round. How conservative to how aggressive I play really depends on the circumstance I am in and how confident I am in executing the shot that I see. Through my experience, I mostly find myself opting for the shot that I feel has the highest percentage of executing properly as I rarely see a big risk worth going for.
Through golf, I have discovered something that I am passionate and dedicated to. I have learned that hard work pays off and in order to achieve the results you want, you need to have a type of confidence in your game that can back up those ambitions. I have learned that though I am out there playing on my own, I would not be able to achieve my golf goals without my “team” of family and friends supporting and encouraging me since day 1.
